Ephemeral Existence
Gallery 339, Philadelphia USA
from Press Release: As a child of Japan's "lost decade," the period following the bursting of Japan's asset bubble, Tetsugo Hyakutake has struggled to understand what it means to be Japanese in today's world. Focusing primarily on industry and infrastructure, Hyakutake seeks to decipher recent Japanese history and culture through the structures that best exemplify it. Hyakutake's conflicted relationship with these sites comes across in his ambiguous images. The grandeur of the structures suggests his admiration for the role that industrialization played in making the Japan of today: a manufacturing superpower, a country rebuilt from the ashes of the Second World War. Yet the images are not robust celebrations of national pride. They have an ephemeral quality, as if they might disperse in the night air—beautiful dreams rather than steel and concrete. Hyakutake's industrial photographs are also more than cold documents; they are suffused with a surprising sense of humanity, evoking the lives and toil that stand behind these monuments. The industrial miracle of the post-war era clearly returned Japan from defeat to a remarkable economic victory, but Hyakutake ponders whether the price was too high and the victory too fleeting.

Pahots
Alan Klotz Gallery, New York USA
from Press Release: Tetsugo Hyakutake, a Japanese citizen, has lived in the United States for the past six years studying photography and sharpening his eye for detail…incredible detail. Perhaps his time here has given him the perspective needed to concentrate his efforts on recording industrial landscapes in his native Japan during his frequent trips home. His eye may have been honed here, but his interest lies in what he refers to as the "Pathos and Irony" of Post WWII Industrial and economic development in Japan. During this time, Japan's need to overcome defeat and adversity brought about the embrace of progress and growth, perhaps at the expense of the reverence usually accorded to traditional societal values.
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 16, 2010, 6:00pm - 8:00pm
